Law Clerk

 

ABOUT THE COMPANY

Sweeny, Wingate & Barrow, P.A. was started in 1993 when the named partners combined their litigation and transactional experience to create a firm committed to excellence, integrity, and service. Since that time, the Firm has grown to approximately 16 lawyers practicing civil defense litigation, and probate and estate planning law. Our firm is structured to meet the litigation and consulting needs of individuals, businesses, and insurance companies throughout South Carolina. Our practice is statewide and we regularly practice in each of the State's 46 counties and all federal courts. We work hard to build long standing relationships with those we represent.

 

POSITION SUMMARY  
A Law Clerk assists Partners and/or Associates with case preparation.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
•    Conduct legal research
•    Perform document review
•    Draft memoranda under attorney supervision
•    Summarize deposition transcripts and medical records
•    Title search and deed search at the courthouse
•    Attendance at depositions, hearings, and trial
•    Perform other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES)
•    Current law school student status required
•    Strong communication skills
•    Organizational skills and attention to detail
•    Research and analytical skills
•    Demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness in work
•    Problem solving and reasoning ability
•    Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products and strong computer skills
•    Willingness to show initiative in seeking out work assignments
•    Strong writing ability


PHYSICAL DEMANDS 
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the functions. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is constantly (5-8 hrs./shift) required to sit, talk, hear, perform repetitive motions, and perform tasks that require eye/hand/foot coordination. The employee is frequently (2-5 hrs./shift) required to handle and grasp. The employee is occasionally (up to 2 hrs./shift) required to stand, walk, lift, carry, reach, and feel. Rarely, an employee may be required to push, pull, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include clarity of vision at 20 feet or more and clarity of vision at 20 inches or less.

The Legal field can often times be a demanding profession. At times, you will be required to spot issues and develop solutions at a moment’s notice. As law clerks, you will confront client problems which at times involve troubling facts. WORK ENVIRONMENT 
General office conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
