"Martin S. Driggers, Jr., partner with Sweeny, Wingate & Barrow, has been elected to the South Carolina Bar House of Delegates beginning on July 1, 2015 for a two year term. The House of Delegates establishes policy for the South Carolina Bar. It meets at least twice a year and includes delegates from each judicial circuit. Between House meetings, the Board of Governors may act on matters not inconsistent with House policy. Recommendations for changes in South Carolina rules of procedure and practice are considered by the South Carolina Supreme Court."

Kenneth B. Wingate was a guest speaker May 18, 2012 at the South Carolina Probate Judges' Bench-Staff Seminar at Seawells in Columbia, South Carolina. Mr. Wingate spoke on South Carolina laws concerning the elective share rights of a surviving spouse to claim one-third of his or her spouse's probate estate, "Determining and Calculating the Elective Share and Omitted Spouses's Share".

Associate Attorney Ryan Holt has been appointed to the Lexington Medical Center Board of Directors. Ryan received unanimous approval from the Lexington County Council to serve his first term on the Board which oversees the management and operations of the hospital. Lexington Medical Center has served the Midlands community since 1971 and is one of the largest employers in South Carolina with more than 5,000 employees.

Sweeny, Wingate & Barrow, P.A. is pleased to announce that J. Eric Cavanaugh and Aaron J. Hayes have joined the firm as associates. Both attorneys are graduates of the University of South Carolina School of Law and served as law clerks for the firm prior to their admission to the South Carolina Bar.
Prior to attending law school, Mr. Cavanaugh helped build a successful family business and served in the communications department of former Governor David Beasley. Mr. Hayes is an alumnus of the South Carolina Law Review and author of the note "Should a Scintilla Be Enough? The Proper Standard for Summary Judgment in South Carolina," 61 S.C. L. Rev. 737 (2010).
Kenneth Wingate Re-appointed Chairman of the S.C. Commission on Higher Education
Gov. Nikki Haley has re-appointed Sweeny, Wingate & Barrow, P.A. founding member Ken Wingate to a four-year term as chairman of the S.C. Commission on Higher Education. In this role, Wingate will continue to oversee implementation of an action plan for the state's higher education system, with the goals of: (1) making South Carolina one of the most educated states, (2) increasing levels of research and innovation, and (3) increasing levels of workforce training and educational services.
Wingate previously served on the Commission as an at-large Governor's appointee and as Chairman under former Governor Mark Sanford. He has also been Gov. Sanford's Transition Team leader; chairman of the Governor's Commission on Management, Accountability and Performance; and interim state treasurer.
